I’m an owner of several HP laptops during the past several years, and all have been good performers. I just acquired the dv4-2173 and it is fast, has a really great keyboard, and is feature rich (I’m still in the learning phase). Note that it came with Win 7 Home Premium which now has the language package (earlier I could only get the language pack in Win 7 Ultimate). Although it is nominally a 14-inch display, it is very similar to the dv6 – you probably won’t notice the difference…. weight is a bit on the heavy side, but the DVD is removable for travel if that fits your needs. I am 36 and purchased this laptop for school. My main points of purchase were long battery, life, and portable. I am not a gamer or anything involving photo or video editing/photoshop type stuff so I cannot comment on those areas. I am an online student who does online research, classes and use microsoft office. I am very pleased with the performance of this laptop. I feel like I did not have to compromise on any of the things I was looking for. I purchased this for my 10 year old son for his birthday. My only problem is that now I want one too! This laptop is so lightweight compared to the Sony Vaio we have. The pro’s of purchasing this laptop are it’s portability, the fact that if dropped the hard drive is “parked”(essential when owned by a 10 year old boy!), it’s speed and memory size and it’s low cost. I researched for weeks and could not find a better option than this computer for the price, as a matter of fact the more expensive lightweight computers had less memory, features etc. The only con for me is I am not accustomed to the multi touch pad yet, but my son uses it more and at first he had a little trouble but now he is used to it and he likes the feature. Once you’re 15, you really do need a notebook for yourself. You will need to browse the internet, need a good word processor, need to be able to listen to music and play games. There are great laptops that can accommodate all of these features for a mere $300. One great inexpensive notebook computer is Acer Aspire AS4730-4857. It has great features and on top of that it is also very sleek and easy to use. Definitely a bargain with great features!

After I got it I booted Windows to make sure everything worked, then I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. Everything works pretty good (though I haven’t tried to use the webcam), the only problem is the wireless (ath9) drivers which causes the connection to stop working or disconnect randomly. I also love how its 14″ monitor, so I can take it anywhere and fit it into any bag. It has a very sleek and glossy exterior. A little bit of work to keep clean, but that’s no reason not to buy a computer. The speakers are great for a laptop. I was actually surprised how clear sounds and music was. As with most HP laptops, you get the lightscribe burner, which is great, but it also comes with a disc replacement thing so if you don’t care to use a disc drive, you can remove it and save some weight.
