I like this laptop very much. It was easy to set up and has given me no trouble. Most things worked except I needed to go and get a new set of drivers for my HP J4550 for Windows 7.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
this product is just as described and works really well. its way faster than windows vista. the shipping was pretty fast and well packaged. i recommend this product to people who are looking for a fast and well built laptop. this laptop is the perfect size, exactly 15.6 in. the price for this laptop is pretty cheap compared to other dell laptop that cost 1000 dollars or more. this laptop is easy to use and set up, probably even a little kid can set it up on there own. so, i think that this laptop is way better than a hp laptop. i had some troubles with hp, even though i had windows 7 on it, it was still very slow, so dell is the best to buy.

    Very happy so far
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have been using an ancient desktop computer for far too long, and to upgrade it would have been more trouble than it was worth. I had been looking into getting a laptop for quite a while, as I wanted something I could take to my band’s rehearsals to record demos and burn copies for my bandmates to work on songs. My father surprised me with the Inspiron 1545 for my birthday a month ago, and so far I have had little to no trouble with it whatsoever.

I have not really used this laptop for gaming much, but everything I have used it for works fast and flawlessly. I do a lot of photo editing, art, and music recording, and even when multitasking everything runs smoothly. I have also never had an error resulting in any loss of data (this should be a given, but coming from the machine I had been using, it is a blessing). I primarily use simple single-track audio recording, but I have also installed and on occasion have used professional multi-track recording software for writing and recording music at home (one track at a time), and it seems to run very well on this system. The built-in speakers aren’t the greatest quality, but I haven’t found many laptops that do have great speakers. It is also very easy to plug it into my HDTV in order to use an extended desktop, which is very convenient for programs like Photoshop.

This laptop is plenty powerful enough for the average user’s needs, and unless you’re looking to do a lot of PC gaming I don’t think you would need anything much more powerful. I did buy Spore and have played that a bit and it ran fine, but otherwise I cannot speak for its gaming capabilities. It would likely be sub-par for any graphics intensive games.

The only real complaint I have is that the touchpad occasionally seems to not want to respond properly. This is a rare occurrence, and taking my finger off of it for a few seconds usually seems to solve the problem, but it is very frustrating when it happens. Also, double-tapping the touchpad works as if you are holding the left-click (which I believe is standard), but it is far too sensitive and too easy to accidentally activate this feature. These are minor annoyances, but annoyances nonetheless and are primarily why I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5.

I have, fortunately, not had to deal with Dell’s customer service (and of course I hope that I will not have to) so I can’t speak for that aspect of the company. From what I have read they seem to have a growing reputation for poor customer service, but I will not subtract from my rating based on reputation. I will say that when I went to their site to download drivers I was recommended to try their download manager which did not work. Once you try to use this feature it will not give you the option to simply download the drivers directly until you delete your browser cookies. If they are able to over-complicate something as simple as downloading drivers (the most basic aspect of tech support) I shudder to think what I may have to deal with if real problems arise.

I feel that I should point out that it is difficult to judge any Windows-based PC by reading user reviews. I have read a good many reviews of laptops where the consumer is unhappy with the product due to crashes, slowdowns, slow startups or other problems after a couple weeks to a month or more of use, and more often that not those problems arise due to viruses/driver conflicts/general software problems and not a flaw in the hardware itself. Most people that aren’t very tech-savvy that have problems with a PC/laptop in the first couple months will immediately blame the hardware instead of their questionable browsing/downloading habits. Too many people don’t realize that having fifteen instant messengers, weatherbug, and other unneeded programs running at startup WILL cause it to take longer to start up. I recommend anyone reading user reviews on these types of things to keep that in mind.

To summarize, this laptop has been great for me thus far, and other than some minor quirks with the touchpad I have really had no problems to speak of. It starts up fast, I never have problems with slowdown even when multitasking with more demanding programs, and though I was hesitant about Windows 7 after the abomination that was Vista, I find myself absolutely loving it.

For the price, I would definitely recommend this laptop.

    Great Depending The Configuration
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I had mine custom built from the Dell website for a bit more in cost but worth it. This model replaces the 1525 I owned and served me extremely well but I needed a bit more under the hood so to speak.

Even having mine built there were some options not available in this model that really surprised me. Most notably is no option for a built-in modem so you have to buy a USB dongle modem if you need dialup access or fax capability. 3 instead of 4 USB ports is a bit surprising as well. No HDMI (I personally do not miss this but the 1525 had this standard) and no S-Video output. Obviously not deal breakers for me but enough to be mentioned.

One small item that really does bug me is the omission of a hard drive activity indicator. The only indicator is the power LED that doubles for a low battery indicator. Many times has been good to know if the drive was active when the screen seemed frozen while the computer was deep in thought. The hard drive is so quiet in this laptop if the screen would freeze you would be very hard pressed to hear any drive activity.

As many have mentioned the black gloss look is sweet but does love to remember fingerprints that after a good day of use the gloss is not so glossy and you could lift prints to find out who touched it.

    ok now the good stuff

I just like dell. Like any brand some have very good luck and others have very bad luck with certain brands. I have been avoiding 64-bit OS till now but Windows 7 64-bit was the only one offered and I am extremely pleased to say I have had no issues thus far with anything I use not wanting to install. It seems Windows 7 is better suited for compatibility. I uninstalled McAfee with no troubles but I did not uninstall the dell dock but rather just disabled it.

The audio is MUCH noticeably louder than the 1525 was and makes music and movies a much better experience. The display seems to have deeper colors than the 1525 had and does not seem as washed out.

A bit heavy at around 6 pounds but no more than most in this size category.

If you need extra battery time I recommend buying the 9 cell battery as I did that will get you about 7-8 hours which is great.

Summing everything up, in spite of no modem or hard drive LED I am very pleased with this model and I hope my needs do not outgrow this one anytime soon (which the custom build should keep me in step a while lol).

This computer is nothing but a load of garbage. The endless blue screens, the constant freeze ups, crashes every 10-20 mins and it’s slow boot up time and processing speed. Save your money and stay away from this crap.

    Crashed and no customer service
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My college student son chose the Dell after his top-of-the-line Toshiba finally died after four years of working great. The Dell crashed within two weeks of purchase. Black screen. Customer service didn’t exist: phone calls to India, literally HOURS on the phone being transferred from person to person, department to department; service “call” numbers that weren’t recognized after the initial call; promise after promise to return calls – nothing. After nearly a month of waiting for service and/or a replacement, we bought another Toshiba at his local Office Depot. Works like a champ. Dell finally sent a replacement, after nearly SIX WEEKS of waiting, along with a nasty letter telling him that if he didn’t return the busted Dell within 48 hours, they’d charge his credit card another $800. We’re done with Dell – forever!

Good laptop for the price I paid
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I got this laptop during a gold box deal and I am quite pleased with this laptop. I have been using it for like little over a month now and so far have not faced any serious issues. However, the battery life isn’t that great. It says 4 hr battery life but it dies within 2 or 2.5 hrs. Secondly, it attracts lot of finger prints because of the glossy finish. Other than these two cons it is a good entry level laptop.

    Decent.
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have to say, I’ve been a loyal Dell Inspiron customer for many years. I had an Inspiron 8000 – great for its time, in fact I still have it. Then an Inspiron E1505, a fantastic computer, which was just stolen out of my car by some jerk. So, I had to replace it, and went back to the well for an Inspiron 1545.

I guess the rectangular shape of the 15.6 screen is standard on nearly all computers these days, but I sure do miss the big, tall screen on my E1505. This one seems so scrunched. In fact, everything about this computer seems very scrunched. On the good side, it is significantly lighter than the three-year-old E1505 I had.

The keyboard is loud, and feels cheap and slightly smaller compared to the excellent keyboard on the E1505 (and the even better one on the 8000, which is why I keep the old guy around). In fact, the whole computer, while glossy and cool-looking, feels rather cheap. It feels more like a slightly larger version of the Inspiron 700m, which I used for work and has almost the dimensions of a netbook. The 700m is nicely portable but awful to type on. So, this 1545 is kind of an XL version of that.

So far, the innards seem to be working fine (with Windows 7 Professional). However, I am also having trouble with the wireless adapter, which so far does not work. And yes, I’ve had the same problems as others have had in getting any satisfaction from Dell service. Hopefully, it will improve after the holidays. Downloading a driver did not help. That’s another thing: what’s with all these drivers one is instructed to download?? Insane. What a dangerous problem to put in the hands of customers….it’s like I’ve gone backward 15 years. You need an IT guy to help you figure out which (if any) drivers you need to download, and in what order, or else you could do serious harm to your computer. Really stupid on Dell’s part.

So, this is probably my last Inspiron, although hopefully I won’t have to worry about that for several years, assuming I don’t expose it to the risk of being stolen again! (Note to the wise: back it up nightly.)

The Dell online salespeople tried to steer me toward buying a Studio XPS. I need this computer more for business stuff than entertainment, so I went with the Inspiron. Perhaps I made the wrong choice…you might try to physically look at a Studio XPS (at Best Buy?) before making a purchase to see.

I don’t know why Dell seems to be diminishing the quality of one of its mainstream laptops, but so be it. Next time I’ll take a more serious look at HP, Lenovo, Apple and Toshiba.

    Case Hinges are a Problem
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
My current laptop is a 10-year-old (!) Dell Inspiron which has been a wonderful computer as far as the electronics are concerned. I upgraded its hard drive once to get more space and speed and it served me well except for one problem area: Something was wrong with the hinges and the plastic frame that holds the screen in place (I think they call this a bezel) cracked around both hinges inside and outside of the frame. I had this repaired twice for around $175 a pop. I would still be using the laptop were it not for the fact that the plastic has cracked again and I am afraid the screen will crack off the computer during the middle of a presentation.

I resolved never to buy another Dell because of this designed-in defect. Then I did a lot of research about which laptop would best meet my computing needs. Oh, jeeez! Everything indicated an Inspiron would be perfect for me!

Just before I went to Dell to place an order, I found this review: [...]

All kinds of people are still complaining about the hinges!

Before you buy an Inspiron, ask yourself how long you expect to own the computer. The model has gone through a number of changes since I bought mine, but Dell cannot seem to get the hinge problem straightened out.

I’m not surprised reviewers who use the computer for a short period of time are impressed with it. They might change their opinion when they see the top cracking off as the computer ages.

I bot a brand new one. The manufacturer set a D drive as a default drive. After a few installations of software, the D drive was full. It stopped. It took 3 hours for me to get in touch with the tech support. The tech suuport people in India were good, dedicated but were not able to change the drives and they decided to send me a new hard drive. The tech from Dell came to my house installed a new hard drive and left. He assumed the installation process would ended smoothly, but not. The system said “WARNING, the FACTORY.WIM was not present ( a common problem for DELL 64 bit).

I called the Tech Support. It took me another two hours to get through 10 transferrings, one disconnect. Dell assigned me a new Express service code which nobody recognized. The technician in India consulted with his supervisor and decided to send me a new replacement (available around one month from Chrismas day), so my Christmas is January 25th, 2010 (earlier for 2010 but late for 2009). Lets wait and see.

Dell Inspiron 1545 15.6-Inch Jet Black Laptop – Up to 4 Hours 34 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I subscribe to Consumer Report and when my sister (can’t turn a computer on) was looking for a laptop for her son for Christmas I dug out the Consumer Report which listed the Dell laptop as a “Best Buy” it also listed shopping on line for the best price and recommended Amazon.com. Not being much smarter than my sister about computers I headed to Amazon.com and found the laptop. It actually had more features and good stuff than the one listed and it was also on sale. Great product, great price, and free shipping, who could ask for anything more?
